Compass Minerals ® in Goderich Consists of two separate facilities - a rock slat mine at the Harbour and an evaporation plant on the Maitland River.
The mine is over 1750 feet deep, extends two miles out under Lake Huron and is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine produces over seven million tons of highway deicing salt used to keep citizens of North America safe as they travel through winter ice and snow.
The evaporation plant has operated since 1867 and extracts brine to produce high-purity, fine and coarse-grained salt products in packages and in bulk for commercial, agricultural and industrial applications.
